After a relaxing weekend with your family, you pick up your diary to check the following weeks work. As the names of your students appear in front of you what are the emotions that run through your head? Is it "Brilliant, I have Jason out three times this week" or "Brilliant!! I have Jason out three times this week, what was I thinking?" How might these emotions affect the way that we relate to these students?

It took me many years as a driver trainer to realise that I may be treating students differently dependent upon my expectations. There were those students who picked up everything really quickly who I chose to give the opportunity to experience more challenging situations, because it was my belief that they could handle it, and others who I almost dreaded taking out as they never seemed to pick anything up quickly. With these students I may have spent longer completing left turns than right because it was less challenging for both them and myself.
On realising that this was happening I tried an experiment. The next time that I took out my student whom I was dreading, I treated them as one of my 'Star' students. The transformation was unbelievable, he actually started to respond like a 'Star' student, rising to the challenges that I set them and achieving great results
